rumpus with color

There is a new tangle from Zentangle. It's called Rumpus and it's lots of fun to play with. Rick and Maria have a YouTube video demonstrating it that will get you going.

In my version I used a set of 6 3z tiles. (It's done on a Zendala tile in the video.) I used 3zs so I could do this tangle in a larger scale and play with it by rearranging the 3z tiles. Photos below. I used a sepia colored pen and colored pencils for shading.

I originally did it with just a brown colored pencil for shading. I wanted to play with color though so I added two shades of yellow, two shades of orange and two shades of red colored pencils.

One of the fun things about doing it on 3Z tiles is that you can rearrange them to make different patterns. I had a lot of fun playing with the different results. Check my blog post earlier to see some of the options - click here.

Inspired by Henna

Like everyone, I hit dry spells every now and then. I still tangle and enjoy the process, but don't feel like it's something I want to post. Then ... something comes along, and gets the creative juices flowing.

I saw a post from a bakery that decorates cookies with Henna designs. That got me going right to my colored tiles and my Moonlight Gelly Roll pens. What fun!

The tiles were hand colored in advance with professional grade watercolor paints. I have quite a collection now so it was fun picking through them. I will probably do a few more of these on different colored backgrounds.

The Sakura Moonlight Gelly Roll pens are opaque, luminous, gel ink. They work really well on black paper and other dark colors. I wasn't sure how well they would show up on orange paper but just went for it and was happy with what I got.

Phicops and Huggins

This tile is a doutangle with Phicops and Huggins. I decided to try to connect the two tangles by 'growing' the lines for Huggins out of Phicops. Then I had fun embellishing the two patterns.

Before shading. And you'll note that I felt that the lower left corner seemed too empty so I added a little printemps.

Organic and Irradial

Happy  New Year!

It's cold here in Chicago.  I wish I was back in Florida where I spent the holidays with family. Lots of fun activities but I didn't get a chance to post too much. 

I enjoyed seeing seeing two tangles online that were new to me. When I got home I got busy with my pens.

Organic, by Sayantika Ray, flows so nicely.  I played with it with my colored pen first on colored paper.  It can be used as an ornament or, since it is shaped like an egg, I may use it on my Easter Egg tree. I know, I'm thinking very optimisticly about spring.  

I used organic again on a white tile and also used the tangle pattern Irradial from Toms Padros.
