A good friend of mine lost her dad last week. He made it to the age of 90 - and was counting the days that he made it 90+. My friend would always tell me the latest story about her dad. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be missed but he left behind so many wonderful memories. This tile is dedicated to him.
The diva challenge had asked us to incorporate negative space into this weeks project. So when I thought about my friend's dad, the empty heart fit the theme perfectly. I used a renaissance tile along with black and brown Microns and then shaded with black pencil, brown colored pencil, and white chalk for highlights.
The tile is beautiful as is the heartfelt story behind it.

ReplyDeleteThat's lovely, Sue. I'm missing my mom right now. Thursday is the first birthday that we won't have her here. She would have been 88. I think the day will be especially hard on Dad. Maybe I'll draw him something special that day, too.

if you can bear to read it all - it's quite long! It is interesting that there is also a "Zen" aspect to this too, associated with the amazing work of the ceramicist Edmund de Waal.
By the way, I do love your Zentangle piece! It's beautiful. I have not yet had any success working in this colour on a coloured background, and perhaps I should give it another try. I recently acquired some "sanguine" pens to go with my sepia ones. A great combination.

Yours really touched me because we were obviously thinking along the same lines. As I am sure you will have gleaned from what I wrote, I miss my dad so much, and can't believe it's 18 months since he died. He was such a profound influence on my life.

Beautiful shared story, and the tile fits the story very well. I can understand that the heart is to there to vision the empty space someone you love is creating, yet is this heart not empty at all. It is filled with love although you don't see it, like you will always carry your beloved ones in your heart and have the feeling they are with you, although you can't see them.
